The pile takes an impression cleanly, so the lettering reads as part of the material rather than something stuck on top. Most people ask for two names and a wedding date, a child name with the year of birth, or a single word that means something only to two people. Beyond engraving, velour also takes an acrylic or metal plate, a photo inset or colour print.
How velour differs from leatherette and fabric
Leatherette is smooth and practical, comes in twenty-five colours and copes best with frequent handling. Fabric is quiet, with a visible weave, and its eight shades are deliberately muted. Velour loses to both on moisture resistance but wins on depth of colour, and it stays the only option where the lettering goes onto the cover itself.
Fifteen colours
The quietest shades are milk, beige, taupe and pearl grey, and they work well under light wedding photographs. Then come pink, lavender and yellow, more often chosen for children books. The deep half of the palette runs through burgundy, blue, blue-grey, turquoise, violet, dark green, graphite and black. Exact shades are visible in the editor at the cover step.
