A Travel Book is a photo book about one journey, put together so that people leaf through it rather than past it. The format is 20×30 centimetres, the cover is hard 2 mm board, inside there is 170 gsm coated paper and anywhere from twelve to eighty pages. You build the layout yourself in the editor, and we print only once you have approved it spread by spread.

The cover

There are two ways to do the cover. The first is to take a ready design from the editor's library, which holds a hundred covers for particular countries and cities: the name in large letters, the year of the trip and a symbol that place is known for. The book then looks like a publication about that country, and several of them on a shelf read as a series rather than as unrelated albums. The second is a cover entirely of your own, with your frame, your names and the date, built in the editor from scratch.

What usually goes inside

The best travel books tell a route rather than simply show good frames. People put a map with the stops marked on the first spread, write dates and place names under the photographs, add short notes about what happened there and leave one page for tickets and stamps. A year later it is the captions that carry the most weight, because you still recognise the photograph but no longer recall the name of that bay.

How many pages to take

A weekend in one city is covered by twelve or sixteen pages, and that is the cheapest way in. A week of holiday sits comfortably in twenty-four or thirty-two. A long trip of two weeks with moves between cities asks for forty or more, and the maximum is eighty pages. The step between options is small, two pages at a time, so matching the exact volume to your material is easy.

Lamination, endpaper and QR

Pages can be laminated, which makes sense when the book will be handled often or carried around. An endpaper print gives you room for a route map or a dedication right at the start. A QR code leads to a video album or a cloud folder with the rest of the shots, so the book stays paper while pulling the whole archive of the trip behind it.

Frequently asked questions

How many photographs will fit

Reckon on two to four photographs per spread if you want them to breathe. A thirty-two page book comfortably holds around fifty frames along with captions, and twice that if you lay it out densely.

How long does it take to make

Eight to ten working days as standard, counted from the moment you approve the layout. Rush production within five working days is available for a thirty percent surcharge and can be selected right in the order.

Can I avoid building the layout myself

You can hand that over to us. You send the photographs and describe the route, and a designer assembles the book and shows you the finished layout for approval.

How is a Travel Book different from an ordinary photo book

Technically it is the same hard cover and the same print; the difference is how the book is built. A travel book leads the reader along a route, so it carries a lot of text, maps and dates, while a photo book is built around the photographs themselves.
